cleveland magazine :: october 2008

"The city's hottest political blogger, the brain behind Political Science 216, thrives on scandal and fights predatory lenders with a Blues Brothers-inspired move. We have just one question: WHO IS HE?"

Well, well well. It's here! Illustration for Cleveland Magazine piece, written by Erick Trickey, about the humorous, anonymous, and always-right-no-buts-about-it Professor behind the famous Cleveland blog. Special thanks to Jennifer Kessen at Cleveland Magazine, for taking a chance on me.

Check out the blog here.

p.s: my apologies for the tearsheet scan being a little rough...it's hard to get a good scan of a magazine page!

the great undertaking

So, it's the first day of fall, and you know what that means! Probably not, but for me it means senior project time...hardcore! I have so much work to do and am finally diving in head first. For those who actually care (or just read this...I've always hated the idea of shouting out into internet space), I'll take a moment to explain what it is I'm working on.

The idea, in simple terms, is that I need to get people to pick up and read the works of classic authors. Whether it be for the first time, or for a refresher course, these authors will never become irrelevant and I want to spread the word in the most dramatic way possible.

I'm going to be creating 10-12 huge-scale illustrations that will become building wraps, span an entire subway station wall, etc. etc. I have yet to choose a city as my client, but basically the potential city's population will have a much improved, much more educated morning commute. For you Clevelanders, can you imagine flying down the shoreway and seeing Bukowski and all his literary eccentricities displayed on a building as you approach?

I've finalized my list of authors, and it was so much harder than I'd imagined. Here's what I'm anticipating:

- Kate Chopin
- Ralph Waldo Emerson
- Alan Ginsberg
- F. Scott Fitzgerald
- Ayn Rand
- Sylvia Plath
- Charles Bukowski
- Ernest Hemingway (not a huge fan of his writing but still all the more relevant)
- Truman Capote
- Jack Kerouac is a maybe
- Kurt Vonnegut...without a doubt
- T.S. Eliot
- Mark Twain
- Franz Kafka (from Prague...how could I not??)
- and ee cummings is a fantasy but he's more of a poet so...don't know if I can stretch that one. I'd love to choose him though...can you imagine his whole portrait made out of type? The thought gets me way too excited.

So there's the list, the idea, the goal...I'll be posting the drafts for all as I go along. Keep up!

letterpress love

For those who also have a love affair with letterpress, I'll probably be posting inspiration of lovely little letterpress houses where you can make these pieces your own. Today's link is Snow & Graham, in Chicago. Enjoy.
